Thermal pools and spa town operating windows
Bulgarian spa towns have year-round springs; the constraint is mostly outdoor vs indoor pool operation and crowding.
Sapareva Banya
- Springs: One of the hottest mineral waters in Europe (~103°C at source).
- Complexes: Several public and private (e.g., "Aqua Club Kotvata", municipal pools, hotel spas).
- Outdoor pool season: Most large complexes keep at least some outdoor pools open year-round, thanks to the hot water. However, smaller hotels may close outdoor areas November-March and operate only indoor pools.
- Temperatures: Pools usually mixed: 30-36°C relaxation pools, 38-40°C hot pools.
- Booking: Day-entry complexes often need no reservation mid-week; summer weekends and holidays are extremely busy - advisable to arrive early rather than book. Hotel spas: room booking strongly recommended in July-August and around New Year/holidays.
Velingrad
- Reputation: "Spa capital of the Balkans" with many hotels and mineral pools.
- Operating windows: Large hotels typically operate indoor spa zones and at least one outdoor mineral pool all year. Smaller guesthouses may heat outdoor pools only May-September.
- Temperatures: Mineral springs 28-91°C at source; pool water usually 30-36°C.
- Booking: Weekends year-round are busy due to domestic tourism; July-August and public holidays often require advance booking for popular four-star hotels.
- Itinerary rule: For spontaneous travel, target mid-week nights for better availability and prices.
Hisarya (Хисаря)
- Springs: 22 mineral springs, mostly 41-52°C.
- Outdoor pools: Municipal and hotel pools generally open outdoor areas from late May/early June to September; some keep a smaller outdoor hot pool open in winter.
- Winter: Many visitors come for treatment programs; indoor spa areas are open all year.
- Booking: Summer weekends: book. Shoulder season: relatively easy to walk in.
Pomorie (Поморие)
- Focus: Black Sea spa and healing mud (luga) from Pomorie Lake.
- Seasonality: Sea swimming typically mid-June to early September; briefer than the southern coast, as water warms more slowly. Mud treatments: spa centers usually operate April-October; open-air DIY mud baths on the lake are most comfortable June-September.
- Pools: Many hotels have mineral pools open year-round; outdoor pools mainly May-September.
Devin (Девин)
- Springs: Several hot and warm mineral springs; some branded waters (e.g., "Devin") come from the area.
- Facilities: Hotels with mineral pools and water park-style complexes.
- Operating windows: Larger spa hotels: indoor and one outdoor pool open all year, though in very cold winter only indoor may be realistic. Water parks with slides tend to operate June-September only.
- Booking: Summer is high season because Devin is also a base for Rhodope hiking; book for July-August weekends.
Constraints for itinerary planning
- Outdoor spa reliably open: June 1 to September 15 in Hisarya, Devin, and Pomorie.
- Outdoor mineral pools likely usable even in winter: Velingrad and Sapareva Banya.
- Always present a "verify with chosen hotel/complex" step because each property sets its own opening calendar.
