Sopot Town & Chairlift to Stara Planina
Сопот и лифтът към Стара планина
Sopot sits just west of Karlovo at the foot of the Balkan Mountains, birthplace of writer Ivan Vazov. A long chairlift runs from the northern edge of town up to meadows and paragliding launch sites above the tree line. The contrast between flat Thracian Plain and abrupt limestone wall is particularly sharp here.
When to go.
A per-season read on whether Sopot Town & Chairlift to Stara Planina is at its best, simply open, or worth skipping. Confidence reflects research depth.
Paragliding season starts; green foothills and moderate temperatures favor both flying and strolling the town.
Reliable thermals and long days on the ridge make summer the flying season.
Early autumn still workable for flights, but cooler, windier conditions increase cancellations by late October.
Cold and occasional snow make the town a poor activity base in winter.

Botev Peak
The highest peak of the Balkan Mountains is a defining inland landmark rather than a polished tourist site. Its weather, exposed ridges, and long approaches make it a serious mountain objective.
Scenic 90 / 100Buzludzha Monument Ridge
The Buzludzha Monument stands on a grassy ridge of the Balkan Mountains, its abandoned concrete form overlooking the Rose Valley and Thracian Plain. Built in the late socialist period, the saucer‑like hall and tower are now closed but dominate the skyline. Gentle alpine meadows and beech woods around the summit contrast sharply with the monument’s scale.
Scenic 90 / 100Raiskoto Praskalo Waterfall & Ray Hut
Raiskoto Praskalo is a narrow, 124.5‑metre waterfall dropping from Botev’s northern cliffs above Ray Hut in the Central Balkan National Park. A marked trail from the Panitsite area near Kalofer climbs through forest and meadows to the hut, with the waterfall in full view only in higher sections. Snow and high water can make early spring crossings tricky.
Scenic 89 / 100Shipka Pass
One of Bulgaria’s most famous mountain passes and a national memory landscape. The road itself is the attraction here, with the monument and ridge views turning transit into a destination.
