Swimming windows by stretch of coast, what the Turkish border means for Strandzha hiking, and the honest picture on Black Sea ferries and water taxis.
Coastal logistics
Sinemorets-Rezovo area and border considerations
Sinemorets is one of the last villages before the Turkish border; Rezovo is the final settlement.
Border zone: The coast south of Rezovo is a restricted border area, but Sinemorets and Rezovo themselves are open to tourists without special permits.
Access: Road from Tsarevo to Sinemorets is paved and in good condition; continues to Rezovo. No regular public transport Sinemorets-Rezovo; taxi or own car required.
Hiking: Some coastal trails north of Rezovo cross military/border patrol tracks; hikers may be questioned by border police if wandering near the line - carry ID.
Black Sea swimming windows by latitude
Northern coast (Varna, Golden Sands, Albena): Sea temperature typically suitable for swimming mid-June to mid-September, with peak ~24-26°C in late July-August. Early June and late September: water can be 18-20°C; manageable for hardy swimmers.
Central coast (Burgas, Sozopol): Swimming window slightly longer: roughly early June to late September.
Southern coast (Tsarevo, Sinemorets, Ahtopol): Warmest and most stable conditions; some years good for swimming from late May and into early October.
Itinerary rule: For guaranteed warm sea for most travelers, constrain swimming-focused itineraries to June 20 - September 10; allow "shoulder-season" tagging from June 1 - October 1 with advisory about cooler water.
Ferry and water-taxi options
Varna / Burgas ferries: Regular international passenger ferries to places like Odessa and Batumi have been heavily impacted by geopolitical events; as of recent years, regular international passenger ferries are very limited or absent. Domestic ferries Varna-Burgas are not on a stable, year-round schedule; occasional tourist cruises run in summer.
Danube ferries: Ferries across the Danube (e.g., Vidin-Calafat, Ruse-Giurgiu) exist for vehicles and sometimes passengers, but these are border crossings more than tourism services. Schedules and operators change.
Coastal water taxis: Local boat trips connect beaches and small bays around Sozopol, Nessebar, and sometimes the Sinemorets area during June-September (e.g., boat from Sozopol old town to nearby beaches; river boat on Veleka near Sinemorets). They are generally small private operators with no fixed year-round timetables; service depends on weather and demand.
Constraint: Don't build itineraries that rely on specific ferry lines without a manual confirmation step for that season.
